Facebook recently announced its goal for users to “have more meaningful interactions” when using their site. That sounds great! But what exactly does that mean, and how will that impact your business page?
Because ColorWord Creative manages Facebook accounts for many of our clients (and social media tutorials for other), we thought it might be helpful to provide a quick synopsis of the changes.
First of all, users (you, me, everyone!) will see a lot more friends and family featured in our newsfeeds. In fact, their posts will make up the majority of newsfeeds, which means that content from businesses, brands, or media will be very limited.
Sounds bad for business, right?
Maybe, but it doesn’t have to be. What it does mean is that businesses will need to change how they approach Facebook.
Here’s a quick list of Do’s and Don’ts to get you started:
Up to now, the general practice has been to post frequently and regularly. Most businesses post an average of once a day, sometimes more, and often it's the same old content. These are exactly the kind of posts that will get weeded out with Facebook’s new algorithm, meaning no one will ever see them! Instead, post only when you’re sure to get a positive response from the community—no matter if that’s once a day or twice a week!
Do post quality content.
The more interaction (likes/comments/shares) a post receives, the more visible it becomes. Make sure your post has a message/photo/link that your audience will respond to instead of just scrolling by.
Don’t ask for shares or comments!
This might seem like a good idea, but posts that ask users to “like for yes,” or “tag five friends” will be flagged as unwanted content and hidden from newsfeeds.
Tag other friends and other business pages in relevant posts.
Do be Patient
It’ll take some time for all of us to adjust to this change, and that’s okay. Facebook will undoubtedly update its interface in the future, and we will need to adapt all over again. Learn to think of it as a challenge, and don't expect to be perfect right away!
